Logical Explanations Behind the Salem POSSESSIONS:
The Accused

First; the Intro:
We’re all familiar with the events that took place during the infamous Salem Witch Trials. We know about the accused, we know about the accusers, we know about the burnings, the hangings, and the stonings. But how much does the average individual know about the cause of the Salem Trials? What do we know about the reason behind the Salem citizen’s possessions? Where and what is the logical explanation? The Main, but Flawed, Theory: Over the past three centuries, a number of theories have been thought up in order to explain the seemingly incomprehensible origin of Salem’s bewitchery. They all, however, pertain to the idea of “possession by disease.” Demoniacal behaviors were more than likely caused by everyday foods that were commonly ingested. Said fungus, once consumed, had the ability to cause signs and symptoms similar to those that have been reported. Examples of these symptoms include spasms, nervous dysfunction, and paresthesia,- which is the sensation that one’s skin is on fire. Painful seizures, mania, and psychosis,- which is the loss of contact with reality,- were all documented signs. And although this hypothesis is extremely plausible, theories have proven that it’s become highly unlikely that a fungus is responsible. The reason being this,- if a fungus had indeed infiltrated the town’s food supply, the symptoms would have been ranging from house to house. The victims of the Salem Witch trials were too scattered for the theory of a fungi go uncriticized. Not only that, but the symptoms, as described, were “out of rhythm.” Signs of an affliction from a fungal disease do not start, then stop, then start again as they supposedly did for the accusers. More Possible Causes.: Other possibilities include encephalitis, or in other words, a sleepy sickness. This disease,- which could have been spread by birds or other animals,- leaves their victims in a “statue-like condition”; speechless and motionless. It shares similar symptoms as were reported. Lyme disease also proved itself to be a possibility. This sickness is caused by tick bites. Man of the victims, when examined, had red, rash looking marks on their skin. Written By: KayLee Kuehl |
